5 SEO Mistakes Lawyers Should Avoid

Lawyers new to SEO often find their websites being penalized for utilizing “black hat” tactics. From keyword stuffing, to buying back links, gaming the system for search engine rankings is never a good idea. Read on to learn more about my top 5 SEO mistakes lawyers should avoid.

1. Keyword Stuffing

Keywords are critical in driving SEO success. Keyword stuffing involves search engine manipulation. It involves the repetition of words and phrases in the content of a web page or meta text in an attempt to manipulate a site’s ranking in Google search results.

GoogleBots are designed to analyze web content for relevancy. Any page that has over 5% of keyword usage will be flagged for stuffing. This translates into a severe drop in rankings. Google has developed new algorithms to evaluate how keywords are being used on web pages. Publishers should focus on creating useful, information rich content for readers. Use keywords appropriately and within context.  Keep keyword density between 2%-5% and use synonyms to avoid keyword stuffing.

2. Not Using Social Media Networks

Not using social media networks to promote your website will hurt your SEO ranking. Developing a quality social media presence is key to promoting a website online. It is a huge mistake for lawyers to not promote their website on at least one social media network. Most SEO experts stress the importance of social signals. 3. Broken Links

A broken link is a hyperlink that ceases to point to its intended page. It is a source of frustration for website visitors and it gives the impression that you do not regularly update your website. Google highly recommends all webmasters to routinely check for broken links. Google will reduce the search rankings of a website that has too many broken links.

There are several resources available to identify broken links. If you use WordPress, check out the Broken Link Checker plugin. Other methods for fixing broken links include the following:

4. Forgetting the ALT Tag

An alt tag is a common shorthand term used to refer to the alt attribute within an image. Search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, and AOL place a high value on  alt texts.

Use an alt tag anytime you use an image. The alt tag should describe what is on an image and the functions of the image on the web page. Do not spam your keyword into every alt tag.

5. Not Promoting Blog Posts

You may write awesome blog articles. However, if you do not promote them online, no one may find out about them. Do not shy away from promoting your content online. It will take a lot of upfront effort to share your content with readers. Once you gain followers however, they will share it for you. Sharing blog articles and web pages on social media networks will increase traffic to your website. This will have a direct impact on your search engine rankings.

I hope the tips above help. Please share this article with other lawyers.
